Jazmine Hernandez named Junior Volunteer of the Year

DH

As a Hispanic Honor Society student, Jazmine Hernandez wanted to find a volunteer opportunity that allowed her to use her bilingual skills as she explored her interest in the medical field. After joining Denver Health as a volunteer pathfinder, Hernandez called upon her early “training” – babysitting and entertaining her younger brothers – to volunteer in the inpatient pediatrics unit.

Hernandez said her favorite part of volunteering has been connecting with patients close to her age and helping them feel more comfortable in the hospital. According to Denver Health’s Child Life team, Hernandez’s upbeat energy and ability to “talk to patients and families in their native language has made such an impact bringing laughter and joy during her shifts.”

In the past year, the 17-year-old has logged nearly 200 hours with pediatric patients, all while balancing a busy senior year in high school. In addition to other accolades, Hernandez is being named Denver Health’s Junior Volunteer of the Year.

Hernandez credits the guidance she received from staff and her experience with patients for solidifying her interest in pursuing nursing after graduation. This summer, Jazmine plans to join the Army Reserve. When she returns to Denver Health, she hopes it will be as a labor and delivery nurse.
